Paterson Arran
Tradition with a Twist
Sustainable Success
At Paterson Arran, we care about the environment and are committed to achieving sustainability across our business to improve effectiveness and help protect the planet for future generations.
We take our environmental responsibilities seriously and continually monitor the business to maximise our efficiency and sustainability.
- Paterson Arran have been certified to ISO:14001 since March 2009. This is an internationally recognised standard to which our Environmental Management System (EMS) has been audited against.
- Our focus this year has again been on reducing energy, waste and water consumption. There are various on-going targets and objectives which are regularly reviewed by the environmental committee and steering group.
- The amount of waste we send to landfill has reduced from 110 tonnes in 2006, to 50 tonnes in 2010 (54% reduction), despite production increasing by over 50%.
- We have 14 recycling waste streams, (cardboard, plastic, paper, packaging, paper coats, juice bottles, cans, waste electrical equipment, wood ... among others).
- Zero food waste to landfill, most is recycled as animal feed.
- 94% of our waste was recycled in 2010
- Water consumption down 15% from 2006 to 2010 despite huge increase in production, and switching to 3 shift system for large part of the year.
- Reduced the amount of energy used per tonne of product by 23% between 2007 and 2010.
- Still investigating use of renewable energy technology.
- Environmental training is provided to all staff.
- We have worked with Zero Waste Scotland and the Carbon Trust on various projects aimed at reducing our environmental impact over the last couple of years.
- We are continuing to remove palm oil from products where possible. In the smaller number of products that still contain palm oil, it is now RSPO (roundtable of sustainable palm oil) certified.
